“And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the LORD, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”
(Joshua 24:15)

Congratulations! You have made it through another week and are looking forward to Saturday.

If you are a news person, you know that the cycle of news this week coming across our screens, phones and email has been wild. The Presidential race is heating up as we are now under 18 days until Election Day.

In the next few weeks, people will say some harsh things to each other. I have noticed the Facebook statuses growing more intense. As this happens, emotions run at a high rate and friendships can be broken. Digging deeper, you may find the separation between families as well during this time.

Do not be someone who allows politics to come between something excellent. The things of man, when allowed to take priority, can come between a man and his friend, but they can also come between a man and God.  It might seem odd to you that given all the blessings of God and knowing of God’s protection, some people would allow the things of man to come between him and God.

Even Joshua had to address the nation of Israel and challenge them to choose who they would have as their priority. We would think the nation of Israel, having seen the physical care, blessings and protection of God firsthand, would be as close to Him as any group throughout history, but it was not always that way.

Consider Joshua’s words to the people,

“And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the LORD, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”(Joshua 24:15)

People need to be reminded and challenged to choose whom they will serve. Even today, the challenge must be made.

As the world decides to be unkind and let politics come between them and God, let us remember the words of Jesus,

“And as you wish that others would do to you, do so to them.” (Luke 6:31)

Father, today we ask You to be our shield. As we go out into the world daily, may You protect us and be our shield throughout the day. May You guide us in Your Word as we travel on the Earth.

As we hear the things of the world, may those things not occupy our minds. As we see the happenings around the world, may those things remind us this world is not our home.  May You help us keep our minds focused on the things that bring Your blessings. Clear our minds that we may see Your works in the world and our lights may shine greater.

In Your Son’s name, Jesus, we ask these things……Amen.
